Not all bioplastics are the same. They vary in production route, characteristics, and end use applications. Most bioplastics innovators have focused on thermoplastics such as Polylactic acid (PLA) and starch blends, which are great for compostable plates and silverware, however they do not have the strength necessary for industrial use.
Thermoset plastics, such as epoxy resin, offer a superior alternative that forms more complex three-dimensional bonding structures during the curing process, improving the material’s mechanical properties such as enhanced chemical resistance, heat resistance, and structural integrity. In a composite application, the bio-epoxy is the glue or binder holding the fibers together.

ZILA’s bio-epoxy resin systems can be used in a variety of applications including composites, coatings, and adhesives. Since ZILA formulates our bio-epoxy resin for specific applications, we ensure both performance and cure kinetics so our bio-resin systems can be a drop-in solution for product manufacturers. To-date, ZILA has formulated our bio-epoxy for the outdoor industry, indoor concrete floor coatings, and wind turbine blades.

As ZILA is formulating our bio-epoxy resin for any application, we benchmark against best in class currently available resin systems. Through an iterative process with our product manufacturing partners, we use a variety of thermal and mechanical tests to ensure we are as good as, or better than, traditional epoxies.

Some product manufacturers are proactively seeking to reduce their carbon footprint to make their operations and products more sustainable. Additionally, product manufacturers are being pressured to reduce their carbon footprint for a variety of reasons including retailer requirements, government regulations, and carbon markets.

ZILA is currently at the pilot stage of development. We are working with carefully selected product manufacturers to test our bio-epoxy resin systems in their products.
